What You’ll Need:

How to source your plates

The part that takes probably the longest when making your cake tier stand I would dare to say is to source the plates you will use. The three plates that I have used for this cake tier stand I found at my parents’ house.

But if you cannot score the plates at your parent’s house like me you can often find really nice looking plates in thrift stores. Other good places to hunt for beautiful vintage plates would be at flea markets, car boot sales, Etsy, eBay, Kijiji, Craigslist, Facebook Market Place etc.
You can, of course, also put a post up on social media to see if anyone you know has any plates that they would like to declutter and pass onto you And do not forget to check your own cupboards, attic or basement for any potential plates to repurpose.

Where to get a cake tier stand fitting?

I ordered mine from an eBay seller in Australia. I really liked the selection from the seller, but as it was ordered all the way from Australia it took at least 8-9 weeks before it arrived here in Canada. I think this is the same seller which I ordered who is now based on Etsy instead.

I ideally would have liked to order from somewhere closer to home than Australia, but at the time I couldn’t find any other places that sold a good selection of beautiful cake tier stand fittings.

However, I have since then found an Etsy-shop called CakeStandCottage based in New York, United States that sells gorgeous cake tier stand fittings.

If you are based in Australia (or if you are willing to wait as they ship internationally) I highly recommend the seller though. As I mentioned earlier the selection is great and my order was sent quickly & I got a fast response when I started to worry about my cake tier fittings not arriving. Get the correct drill bit!

You will also need a cordless drill and a drill bit suitable for glass or tiles. Do not under any circumstances use normal drill bits because then the plates will break!

Time to make a cake tier stand…

Start by measuring your plates and find the centre of the plates and mark it with a pen.

The next step is to cool down your plate in cold water. You need to do this is because once you’re drilling in them they will become really hot. By cooling the plates down in water you will prevent the plates from overheating.

Once you have cooled down your plates you need to make sure that you are working on a safe surface. Ideally, a workbench, or if it’s warm enough to be outside you can also complete this project on your lawn.
However, as it’s currently winter here in Canada I will have to complete this project indoors. As such I’ve got this piece of wood to protect my floor when I’m drilling.

The next step is to start drilling. You will notice that some plates are easier to drill than others. Some plates will take around 10 seconds to drill while other plates will take a couple of minutes.

I learnt a few tricks along the way. For example, preferably drill at a slower speed and also attach a little piece of painter’s tape where you will drill to prevent the drill bit from slipping.

Once you have drilled all the desired holes it’s time to mount your cake tier stand!

Start by poking the metal screw of the cake tier stand fitting throughout the bottom plate then put a soft washer on. and then start to attach the first part of the fixing. Remember to put a soft washer on before and after attaching each plate!

Repeat this process with the other fixing parts until all three fixings have been attached to the plates!

Tada! This is a final result of my cake thirst and isn’t it pretty? 😍

Pin it for later πŸ’—

I’m super happy with the result and I hope you will be inspired to make your own cake tier stand! πŸ₯°
