Can I Organise my Sewing & Craft Room on a Budget?

How can you organise your sewing room on a budget so that your crafty space can be both functional & pretty at the same time? This is what I am trying to figure out through the process of me making over my craft/sewing room/office, as well as my husband’s office and guest room in the video above.

Actually, for full transparency I made over and filmed this process over a year ago – pre-March 2020 – but for some reason, I never got around to edit and share the footage with you. As I am planning to declutter and improve this space even further I thought I should share what I have already done to this space to make it both pretty & functional for me.

When I started to film this video in the autumn of 2019 one of my other goal besides making it both pretty & functional was to makeover this space on a budget and use things I already owned as much as possible before buying anything new.

Over 2 years ago now I made another sewing room organization video – which you can check out here if you are interested. At that time my goal was to take my sewing space from a complete mess to a workable condition, and since then I have evaluated both my working style as well as organizational style further, which helped me in the process of making over my space once again.

I hope enjoyed following the process of me making over this space in the video above. During this process, I learnt a few tricks on how to transform a sewing room on a budget…

Tip no 1. Move furniture around!

You have probably already heard about this budget interior decor tip – but trust me it can make all the difference!

My first step for getting ideas new ideas on how to place my furniture is to look at Pinterest. You can check out my Sewing room organization ideas board here, and I also have another board where I save Office & Studio space inspiration to.

However, I often get stuck in my head on how it’s “supposed to look” so I find it also helpful to ask family and friends for input. You might have noticed that throughout the video above I got some great input on what I could do to my space from my husband e.g. moving my desk to another location and painting the bookshelf blue instead of white. I would have never thought about it if he hadn’t suggested this to me.

If you are currently in lockdown, like me, you might not be able to have anyone coming over to you and look at your space – instead, I would encourage you to take photos and/or videos to share.
I often find taking photos and videos also helps me look at my space through another lens. I sometimes also draw on top of the photos to help me visualize how it might look like.

Also, remember you can always move furniture back if it doesn’t work out! Do not worry too much if you will like it or not – just try it out and see!

Tip no 2. Do not buy all the things!

You should not buy any new things before you have evaluated how you work best, your organizational style and decluttered the stuff you no longer need.

It can be so tempting when looking at Pinterest and Instagram-worthy sewing rooms to want to buy ALL THE THINGS, including stuff like cute matching storage containers and nifty organizational gadgets. You do most likely not need most of them.

Remember, it’s more important to have a functional sewing space over that it looks good on photos!

Also, I made a video recently on 7 helpful sewing tools I recommend you to make instead of buying – check out that video if you haven’t already if you want more budget sewing space tips.

Tip no 3. Re-use things you already have in a new way!

Before buying new try to re-use things you already have, and try to use some of these items in a completely new way.

For example, the Ivar bookshelf was previously tucked away in a cupboard, but it’s now on display painted in blue. I also had the metal bowl, which I now store my tailor’s ham & sausage in, in my living room. As I didn’t have any good place for the bowl anymore I stored it away in a cupboard until I figured I could use it to store my tailor’s ham and sausage in between use.
