How to DIY T-shirt Yarn

In the video tutorial above I show you how to make your own t-shirt yarn. T-shirt yarn is perfect for both knitting & crochet projects.
It is a very easy project to make of old worn-out t-shirts that are beyond repair or those unwanted t-shirts you got at work or after completing a race or similar.

To make t-shirt yarn you will need:

  • Old unwanted t-shirts. They can both have no side seams to create continuous t-shirt yarn but it also works to use t-shirts with side seams (I will show you how to attach the yarn ends later on!)
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Fabric marker
  • Lots of time! πŸ˜‰

Time to get started making your own t-shirt yarn!

Start by cutting off the sleeves, neckline and hem.

Then lay your fabric flat, and start to measure and mark how wide do you want the t-shirt yarn to be. In the video above I am cutting 1-inch strips, but you can cut as wide or as thin as you like.

How to make continuous t-shirt yarn from a t-shirt without side seams

Fold your t-shirt leaving about one inch from the edge. Cut the folded fabric until the fold ends leaving the 1 inch to until the edge uncut – so that if the strip is still attached.

Unfold the t-shirt, insert your hand to separate the strips and flatten the uncut part, then start to cut diagonally as shown in the video.

Once you finish cutting, pull the fabric through your hands to create a roll and then start rolling the yarn into a ball.

There you have your first ball of t-shirt yarn!

How to cut t-shirt yarn from t-shirts with side seams:

Start by cutting off the neckline, sleeves and hem. On the t-shirts with side seams, I would also cut off the side seams and all the other seams.

I like to use up as much of the t-shirt as possible, as such I also cut off any seams from the sleeves and use the sleeves to create yarn.
Save the excess fabric and fabrics scraps from this project. I have a video coming up on what to do with fabric scraps! πŸ˜‰

Measure and cut off strips from the remaining pieces of fabric to continue making your t-shirt yarn. When you cut off strips from the sleeves make sure to only include the strips that are long enough. Put the too small pieces in your fabric scrap pile. And, of course, the same applies to your shoulder and neck area so put the small pieces in your scrap pile.

Now when all the t-shirts are cut into strips and it’s time to pull the fabric and roll your balls.

So there you have it! Another ball of t-shirt yarn completed.
