Step-by-step: How to attach a lining to a vent

Step 1: Start by cutting out the vent in your lining following your pattern. Then stay stitch 1 cm away from the top of the vent. Turn to double-check if the 1 cm measurement is correct using your sewing machine. Then slightly curve around the corner stitching another 1 cm.

Step 2: Create a notch towards the curved corner making sure not to snip the stay stitching. Turn the coat – wrong sides together – and make sure that your lining is matching the edge of the vent. Pin in place.

Step 3: Stitch vents together with lining. Stop at start of the stitch line of the stay stitch.

Step 4: Once both vents are sewn to the lining it is time to stitch in the stay stitch.

Step 5: Turn the lining! Press lining and vents in place, as well as pleat (if your lining has a centre back pleat). Follow by pressing the hem with a 4 cm fold.

Step 6: Turn the lining again – wrong sides together – and attach the lining at an angle. The hem will still be 4 cm – however – the angle gives more ease to the lining. Repeat on the other side.

Step 7: Turn back the lining to the right side again. Pull through. Use pin if needed to get corners out. Press vent as well as the hem fold line.

Step 8: Turn to the wrong side again. Stitch fold in place at the bottom vent side. At the top vent, I stitched along the 4 cm hemline.

Step 9: Now topstitch the bottom vent. Press again.

At the bottom of the front of the coat, there was a gap that I tried to close with fusible tape. However, it didn’t hold in place properly so I decided to whip stitch the gap together using a matching thread.
I also did a couple of stitches at the fold of the top of the vent to keep it in place using black thread that matches the lining. However, these steps are optional.

Now the vent is finally attached to the lining! 👏🏻
